NMT English: a 6-month preparation plan
A step-by-step plan for senior students: diagnostics, weekly rhythm, mock tests and the final month before the exam.
Six months is a comfortable timeframe to prepare for the NMT English test without panic. Here’s the plan we use with our students.
The test format and rules can change. Before you start, always check the current programme and sample papers on the official website of the Ukrainian Center for Educational Quality Assessment.
Month 1: diagnostics
Sit a full mock test under realistic conditions: timed, with no dictionary or phone. The result shows what needs the most work — reading, grammar or vocabulary.
Months 2–4: steady work
- 2–3 sessions a week of 60–90 minutes rather than one long marathon.
- Read every day — at least one short article in English. Note new words in context, not in isolation.
- Grammar by topic: tenses, conditionals, the passive, modal verbs.
- Once a month, a full mock test with a review of every mistake.
Month 5: strategy
Now focus on technique: finding the right paragraph quickly, avoiding distractor traps, and how many minutes to spend on each task.
Month 6: no new material
The last month is for review and mock tests only. Don’t start new topics in the final two weeks — your brain needs to consolidate what’s already there.
The key point
Consistency beats hours. Thirty minutes a day works better than four hours once a week.
