IELTS or Cambridge: which exam should you take?
Comparing IELTS and Cambridge English (B2 First, C1 Advanced): what they’re for, how they’re scored and how long they last.
Both exams are recognised worldwide, but they solve different problems. The right choice depends on your goal.
IELTS
- Two modules: Academic for university study, General Training for work and migration.
- Scoring: a band score from 0 to 9 for each skill and overall.
- Validity: most universities and organisations accept results for 2 years.
- Best for: university applicants abroad and people planning to relocate.
Cambridge English (B2 First, C1 Advanced)
- Level-based: you sit an exam at a specific level and receive a certificate for that level.
- The certificate doesn’t expire — although some institutions may ask for a recent result.
- Best for: school and university students, your CV, and proving your level for life.
How to choose
- Check the requirements. Look at the university, employer or immigration website — it will say which exam and score you need.
- No specific requirement? For general proof of level, Cambridge is often more convenient because the certificate doesn’t expire.
- Need a score right now for admission or a visa? That’s most often IELTS.
